OK, I know this is 5 hours after the matinee, but here is my report. He was phenomenal. He seemed so comfortable, so at home. He is just such an amazing performer, but we all know that. He changed so many things up from the last time I saw it. I love the top hat popping at the end...very cute.
The king is very different, but I got used to it. Unfortunately, no Rick Holmes this afternoon. You can really feel the difference. You can see how much of his performance is scripted, and how much more he puts into it. He is hilarious! Very gifted. Tom was in the show this afternoon and what can I say...hysterical. All the stuff when he was Prince Herbert was priceless. His faces had everyone cracking up.
It was not really much of a Clay crowd. There was clapping for him when he first appeared, and laughing at all his jokes of course...but you can tell it wasn't mostly us. The crowd seemed to appreciate him though.
I wish I could remember more details. He was very cute in the Not Dead Yet scene, and he did poke Tom with the triangle ringy thing. He got laughs for the Idol of my Age line...but you could tell some people did not get it. He didn't catch the LOTL's arm in the Camelot scene...Of course he was a totally oogling perv throughout like always! The quail line got a lot of laughs, and he did that whole scene more like a statement than the usual question of "The quail?" He lay on the floor praying for a long time while God was speaking. He was really funny in Brave Sir Robin, and the people laughed a lot...but you could still here the minstrals whole song, which was good. Pooping his pants has become a huge production! Very funny. YWSOB was amazing...very impressive as always. The crowd really responded to that. Brother Maynard was very funny...he has individualized all his characters so much...they are so different from one another. The hand shake thing during the peasant scene is still hysterical. It never gets old when he puts his hand out and the peasant ignores it! Because he times it just right, so that they are never looking his way. He seemed to be having such a great time during Always Look On the Bright Side of Life, and he shimmied with one of the girls...cute...and he gave us his usual salute as the lights went out.
OK, this is exceptionally long...but if you can get there...do get to this show...You will love him more than ever! Oh, I could not stay for stage door, but I heard there was a nice crowd. And you have seen the pictures of that already. I always say this, but it's truer now than ever. I could not love him more, if I actually knew him.

From LauraQ....
Theatre was packed....if it wasn't sold out, it was close. NJU sitting next to her practically choked to death she was laughing so hard. She was laughing so hard she shook Laura's seat. He sang the Amen tonight. People clapped all thru the performance. The crowd was very lively.
Stage door was at least 4 to 5 deep all the way around. Laura got her pic taken with him.....she is practically incoherent!!!! She will try to post pics tonight after they get something to eat. Clay wore same hoodie as he did this afternoon.

From CV:
I just got back from my trek to the matinee too. I agree with all KrystyneY at CB said. It was mostly NJU and they really did respond to Clay's big song (he won them over). He and Tom Deckman stand out as the best in their characters, both so marvelous I was sitting in the front row right orchestra next to lolacat and Patti58. We were sooooo close that when Clay came out in his tux in the finale and came over to that spot, we had to look straight UP -- he was right there, so close and tall. I think for those few minutes he was there, doing a bit of a shoulder shake (*g*), there was no breathing or heatbeats from us three. For all I know, we may have had our mouths gaping open. He was so close and Oh, my, I am not sure I recovered yet. Can I please always sit in the front row?
At stage door, Clay was in a good mood and chatting and laughing a bit. It was packed! Hard to get near and get pictures there were loads of people around the barriers. I was happy, it was as crazy a crowd to try to get his autograph as original spamalot run. He did pose for pictures with a few individuals, putting his head right against theirs and smiling. I saw one such smile right in front of me but stood and watched without snapping a picture -- it is such a natural, beaming smile. The lady behind me hadn't gotten an autograph so I let her use the hole in the crowd in front of me to get in her booklet. I tried to get pictures, but only two show his face without people and playbills obscuring it. I should bring a stepstool next time! I gave Jerome some little striped infant booties to give Clay (for Parker, of course); He collected quite a few gifts while Clay was signing.

From Clayphan:
I didn't see this posted here yet, but Brett was there tonight with 2 friends sitting in center orchestra. Clay added some more animation to all of his roles, especially during "YWSOB". I'm in the process of uploading videos from both the matinee and the evening stage doors. They are going to take a while because he stayed out there extra long both times. JAX!!!!! I got it on video this afternoon when he asked about you and then I got it on video tonight when he talked to you via Jess's phone

From CH: I don't see many recaps about last night. This is not my strong suit. First I would like to say I met the lovely Marilyn and totally had a great time talking with her over dinner and at the show. <waves> Here are a few things I remember. He was great last night even though there was a different Lancelot (who I thought was good by the way) for Clay to interact with. He added some facial expressions and was really animated, I thought. When he did the piano he hit a bad note and made an adorable face when he heard that note. Got a few laughs for that. Lots of crossed eyes and tongue action for his big number. He did a different Amen - it was sung but not in the full out way but an abbreviated, soft amen that was repeated by the other nights. He did the high "3" again. When the peasant sat back down at the end, the entire group of Knights came to that side of the stage and just stare at her - she was laughing and fanning her self - they stood there for a minute or so just looking at her. Very funny. Lots of shimmying in the last number. As usually it is all a big blur to me but I remember thinking I enjoyed this show as much as any I have seen. Once in a while I don't mind a new character here or there so I enjoyed Tom and Rick's replacements. That Clay guy was really great. Hope someone else has a better recap...
